Coriolanus

October 20th - 29th, 2016

A story of class conflict in ancient Rome. A play for our time.

The play is based on the life of the legendary Roman general Caius Martius Coriolanus, whose contempt for the people is matched only by his martial valor. Coriolanus is the name given to Martius after his triumphant military victories against peasant uprisings challenging the newly minted republican government of Rome. Following his success, Coriolanus becomes active in politics and seeks political leadership in the Senate. His coarse temperament is unsuited for popular leadership and he is quickly deposed by a rioting Roman populace. Exiled, he aligns himself with former enemies to set matters straight according to his own will. But the alliances he forges to exact terrible revenge on his homeland results in his ultimate downfall.
