Faustus

by Christopher Marlowe

Dissastisfied with the limits of traditional forms of knowledge, Doctor Faustus, a well-respected German scholar, decides that he wants to learn to practice magic. He begins his new career as a magician by summoning up Mephastophilis, a devil. Despite Mephestophilis’s warnings about the horrors of hell, Faustus tells the devil to return to his master, Lucifer, with an offer of Faustus’s soul in exchange for twenty-four years of service from Mephestophilis.

With this production, Shakespearemachine takes its first step outside of the Shakespearean canon with a play by one of his best-known contemporaries.

Macbeth

by William Shakespeare

Shakespearemachine presents one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies.

A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia.

Forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death.
